Wednesday 21 April 2010

Nice early appointment with the specialist – Mr Morrissey.  Apprehension has been building since I got up, but hey, soon be all over.  Chris has come down for support.

Called into the consultation room and after the introductions, Mr Morrissey takes a look (down throat) and has a feel (lymph node) and is pleasantly surprised my doctor has spotted it - gold star for Tatiana.  I then survive having the camera thing shoved down my right nostril and we sit down to talk turkey.  Things are maybe not as innocent as first thought – gulp.  Specialist wants to take a closer look with me under anaesthetic and may do a left tonsillectomy if he thinks that’s necessary.  Another alarm bell starts to ring – he’s going to clear some space on his schedule for the following Friday.

OK, this is all starting to sink in a tad.  Next Friday is my birthday and I had significantly different ideas on how I was going to spend it.  Having day surgery never even crossed my mind as something I’d like to do that day.  The chosen Golf trip out of town with the boys had much more appeal when I organised it a month back and strangely still does.

Anyway, to really make sure things are all looked at properly, I’m getting an appointment for a CT scan on my neck and chest as well as another one for ultrasound and biopsy of my left lymph node – happy days, even more poking and prodding to add to an already climbing sense that things actually aren’t all alright.  These last two tests he’s requesting within two weeks, so results might not be in before the surgery.

As some cold comfort, I’m told that as a non-smoker, there probably won’t be anything sinister, but let’s just make sure.

By this time, I’ve already informed my family that this thing has been found and am not only trying to digest the possible implications/outcomes for myself, but thinking about what and how I pass some of this on.  Decide honesty is best policy – less stressful for me.

So, having accepted my changed birthday plans, life returns to normal and I await confirmations of the surgery and appointments for the other tests.
